Liz Merryman's Caravel wins second Stakes at Presque Isle

ERIE, Pa.--Caravel, bred, owned and trained by Elizabeth M. (Liz) Merryman and ridden by Pablo Morales, won the $80,000, 6 1/2 furlong Malvern Rose Stakes for 3-year-old Pa-bred fillies at Presque Isle on Oct. 22.

This was her second Stakes win, both at Presque Isle and both under Morales, and her fourth win from five starts, running her earnings to $140,872 and contributing to Morales' Leading Jockey title at Presque Isle.

Caravel sprinted to the lead from the start, setting fractions of 23.28, 45.85, 1:09.15 and drew off to win by 4 3/4 lengths in 1:15.40..

"She shot out of the gate at the start when she broke, so it was clear we'd take the lead," said Morales. "I was nursing her all the way, and I had a ton of horse left in the tank when I hit the stretch, and when I asked her she just took off."

"I love this horse," said Morales. "She's so fast but does it so easily. The quarter in .23 wasn't fast for her, she did it last time in .21."

Caravel, 3 for 3 after winning the Lady Erie Stakes

Caravel, owned, bred and trained by Elizabeth Merryman, survived a hot pace and remained undefeated in Monday’s Lady Erie S. at Presque Isle.

Unleashing a furious stretch rally from last to get up debuting at five furlongs on the Penn National turf June 24, the gray showed a new dimension when setting the pace and running away to a 5 1/4-length Pennsylvania-bred allowance tally July 29. Breaking sharply as the clear third choice here, Caravel once again showed speed and stalked a long-shot frontrunner from close range through a quick :21.78 quarter. Poking her head in front at the top of the lane, she looked to have stalking odds-on favorite Owlette to deal with in the lane, but was always going better of the two and bounded home unchallenged through the final furlong.

Caravel is the first foal out of a dam whose subsequent produce is a juvenile filly by Bourbon Courage and a yearling Great Notion colt. She was bred back to the latter side this spring.

LAUREL, MD – Ninatt Gardner’s Royal Renege, unhurried near the back of the pack in the early going, came with a steady drive on the far outside to run down leaders Daylight Ahead and Giddy Up and win Sunday’s featured second race at Laurel Park.

A 7-year-old Pennsylvania-bred mare making her first start in nine months for trainer Liz Merryman, Royal Renege ($16.60) ran 5 ½ furlongs in 1:01.62 over a Fort Marcy Turf Course labeled firm to win the $47,000 third-level optional claiming allowance by a length.

It was the fifth career win for Royal Renege, now 13-for-22 lifetime in top three finishes, fourth at the distance and second at Laurel, where she has been off the board just once in six lifetime races.
